Stomach bloating - the one drink you should AVOID or risk trapped wind pain

STOMACH bloating could be caused by certain foods in your diet, or by eating too much in one go. But you could also be at risk of trapped wind pain and tummy aches if you regularly drink this one beverage. Avoid this drink or risk a swollen belly.

Stomach bloating: Dr. Oz advises on how to 'beat the bloat'

Stomach bloating affects most people at some point in their lifetime, according to the NHS.

The condition could be caused by eating much food in one sitting, or by swallowing too much air.

Certain foods or drinks could raise the risk of stomach bloating, a nutritionist has revealed.

Drinking ‘diet’ soft drinks could be the cause of your trapped wind, said A.Vogel’s nutritionist Emma Thornton.

Just because diet drinks are low calorie, it doesn’t necessarily make it a healthy option, said Thornton.

All fizzy drinks increase the risk of feeling bloated, as they contain gas which can become trapped.

Some artificial sweeteners in diet drinks aren’t properly broken down in the gut, which leads to excess gas, she said.

To avoid bloating pain, it’s best to swap your fizzy drinks for plain, old-fashioned water.

“Artificial sweeteners are high in a compound called polyols, which aren’t broken down and absorbed before they reach the large intestine – and we know what this means – gas,” said Thornton.

“Finally, in the long-term artificial sweeteners are thought to potentially upset blood sugar balance and insulin responses which can actually lead to weight gain.

“Water is so underrated, for all bodily functions really, but weight loss too.

“It helps to get your bowels moving, helps clear toxins out your body, and keeps everything ticking over.

“If you’re dehydrated you’re more likely to suffer from water retention as your body desperately tries to cling on to every last drop.”

Instead of diet fizzy drinks, everyone should aim to drink one and a half lives of still water daily, she added.

You also run the risk of feeling bloated if you regularly eat too many apples.

The fruit contains fructose, which is broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, which leads to trapped wind.

If you often feel bloated, it could be caused by constipation, a food intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome.

You may be constipated if you haven’t passed at least three stools in a single week, or if the stool is hard and dry.

Food intolerance could lead to bloating if the bowel doesn’t entirely empty, or if too much gas is produced as a result of a reaction to food.

Speak to a doctor if your bloating symptoms persist, as it could be caused by a more serious underlying medical condition.

For example, persistent bloating could be an early warning sign of ovarian cancer in women.
