Thousands of daring dippers around the country took the New Year plunge despite freezing temperatures

Some wore woolly hats and wigs with bathing suits for the dip while other dressed up as Batman, bananas and a lion.

One man was captured wearing a women's bikini and an elf hat while another man put on a Hawaiian skirt.

Margaret Mcquillan, 55, and Melanie Harriott, 43, dressed up in Victorian bathing costumes.

The pair, who are both nurses from Gateshead, took part in the event for the second time.

Margaret said: "It was breathtaking, it was very cold. It's a good way to start the year."

Other daring dippers included members of South London Swimming Club who enjoyed their first swim of the year at the outdoor pool at Tooting Bec Lido.

And despite the teeth-chattering 4.5C temperature the avid swimmers performed lengths of the pool while one man executed a celebratory 'bomb' dive.

In North Somerset, swimmers had to brave some rainy conditions while taking the plunge at Clevedon Marina Lake.

Hilarious pictures from Broadstairs in Kent show swimming enthusiasts enjoying their New Year dip.

And over 1000 people also took part in a charity swim in Saundersfoot in South Wales.

In Scotland, more than 1,000 hardy revellers kicked off 2017 with a bracing dip in the chilly River Forth in the traditional Loony Dook.

Participants donned fancy dress for the sell-out event at South Queensferry and paraded along the High Street before running into the water in the shadow of the Forth Bridges at around 1pm.

A New Year's Day tradition for more three decades, this year around 1,100 people took part and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.

One picture shows four people dressed as the Loch Ness Monster against the backdrop of the iconic Forth Rail Bridge.
