Maths tutor, 33, acquitted after claims she ‘started lesbian affair with pupil after showering her with gifts’

Aveesha Ahsan was acquitted of charges after court heard she asked the 16-year-old to engage in sexual activity and even marry her

A MATHS tutor was acquitted after claims she desperately tried to start a lesbian affair with a pupil showering her with gifts and bombarding her with sexual messages.

Aveesha Ahsan asked the 16-year-old to engage in sexual activity and even marry her in WhatsApp messages, prosecutors said.

Inner London Crown Court was told the 33-year-old tutor's advances eventually became physical

The tutor was accused of sexually assaulting the pupil in 2015 and 2016.

The court heard that while pursuing the teenager Ahsan bought her a Kindle, phone SIM card and offered to pay for her prom dress.

Prosecutor Sophie Shotton said: "It was clear the defendant was fully aware of the complainant's age as she was a student of hers but also because the complainant told the defendant that she was 16 in WhatAapp messages that passed between the two of them."

The court was told that police were informed of the allegations after the victim spoke to a teacher at her school.

Ms Shotton said: "She said the defendant had been sexually inappropriate, had pushed herself on to her and she told her teachers about the messages the defendant had sent her."

She continued: "The messages included comments about how attractive she was, and the defendant asking her whether she could have sex with her.

"In short the Crown say these messages show the defendant's behaviour was manipulative, inappropriate and in a sexual manner towards the complainant.

"Messages sent by the defendant included comments about her appearance, comments about her body, requests to hug her, repeated requests to kiss her, a marriage proposal, comments about sex, including a request to do sex with her."

I was very confused. She offered to help me and every teacher has a favourite student and I thought it was like that

Alleged victim

On one occasion Ahsan is said to have given her alleged victim a letter proposing marriage before saying "you're going to take this to the police", ripping it up and throwing it in the bin.

The prosecutor said: "The comment made by the defendant about taking it to the police in the way which she did and then rip it up and throw it away shows she knew what she was doing was wrong."

A recorded interview with the alleged victim was played to the court in which she said: "I was very confused. She offered to help me and every teacher has a favourite student and I thought it was like that.

"But she would say something and then used to back off.

"Like she would say something and she would act like I did something and blame me like I'm controlling her."

Ahsan, of Catford, south London, denied one count of sexual assault and one alternate count of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust.

She was acquitted of both charges in December 2017.
